When it comes to principles of entrepreneurial success nothing is more proven than sowing and reaping. It’s more effective than any business, marketing, or social media plan you’ll ever come up with. Why? Take a look at this short verse from Genesis 26:12 (amplified);

“Then Isaac sowed seed in that land and received in the same year a hundred times as much as he had planted, and the Lord favored him with blessings.”

This scripture is pretty self-explanatory, Isaac sowed a seed and received a great harvest. However, to understand why Isaac received a harvest we have to take a step back to verses 2 & 3.

2And the Lord appeared to him and said, Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I will tell you.

3Dwell temporarily in this land, and I will be with you and will favor you with blessings; for to you and to your descendants I will give all these lands, and I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.

You see, anyone can sow a seed but there are certain variables that must align before you see a harvest. It all comes down to being in the right season to plant seed, giving it time to grow, and reaping your harvest. Isaac was in the right season to be blessed, he obeyed the voice of the Lord, planted his seed, and reaped a great harvest.

What does this have to do with your business? Everything! When you sow a seed you exercise your faith that the seed will grow. You anticipate growth without knowing what the full harvest will be. This is where favor sends you a harvest a hundred times more than you planted.

To get a full grasp of this principle let’s first define what sowing and reaping does for you and your business.

  • It blesses you by taking care of present and future needs (God’s obligation for your sacrifice).
  • It blesses others because your business was destined to be a blessing and not just make money.
  • It gives freedom for God’s will being done through you and your business (our obligation to God for giving us the vision).

Now that you understand what it is and how it benefits you, let’s talk about “what to sow.”

  • Tithes & offering – The Bible says to give a 10th of your income. I’ve always been taught to give a 10th plus a little extra. Why? If you give God your best you’ll receive the best from Him. Giving a 10th is your obligation as a Christian entrepreneur and giving an offering is your sacrifice. Combined, God is obligated to do exceedingly and abundantly more than you can ask or think.
  • Time & effort – In order to receive a harvest a hundred times as much as you planted you have to do your part. Meaning, you have to be willing to put your hands to the plow and work the land (or vision) God has given you. That means not giving up, staying persistent with the dream, and sticking with it when times get tough.
  • Products & Services – Sometimes it’s strategic to sow products and services to organizations, people, or businesses that need them. This is a  great way to build credibility, relationships, and generate buzz for your business. God honors your sacrifice and will definitely make it worth your while.

A Short Story

I haven’t always been a faithful tither but when I give I never worry about needing anything for my life or business. It’s interesting how God honors the financial sacrifice and gives us back more than just money. Ideas seem to flow freely, favor from others enters my life, and I lack nothing to accomplish my goals.

It’s really awesome how it all works in the supernatural to enhance our natural lives.

I remember needing a place to host my monthly seminars on business leadership and I couldn’t stand to pay my local library anymore (non-profits could host events free but for-profit organizations couldn’t). I remember challenging God to make something happen and He challenged me to sow a seed. I started bringing my tithes and offering on a consistent basis to church. Before the end of the month I got an offer from a pastor, who’s church I didn’t belong to, to host my seminar series – free of charge – at his church!

That’s how I know it really works. If you don’t believe me, then challenge God for yourself and watch Him work on your behalf. If you need financing to start or grow a business, need new equipment, investors, etc. – this is how you get it. Try it . . . I dare you!

Has anyone else experienced this level of success from sowing and reaping?

    Rod,
You nailed this one! The scripture you reference is so powerful because Isaac planted in the midst of a famine. This relates so closely to the times that we live in right now. Many people are hesitant to sow in this recession because they are only thinking about their seeds vs the harvest that the seeds have the potential to produce. It's counterintuitive to sow in the middle of a famine – or a recession. But when we are obedient to God's word (tithing, giving, serving with excellence, etc.), it's amazing how He always comes through often in ways that we didn't expect. God is always faithful to His word. We have to be just as faithful to trust Him.

    Keep doing B.I.G. things!

    Your Brother,
    Paul Wilson Jr.

Great post Rod! I love how gave us a story form your own experiences.

Sowing and reaping is truly a Biblical Principle we all need to apply. It is not about wanting to get something back but rather it is about being obedient to God's will for your life. I see it as a way to edify the saint and glorify God. Sure I accept the blessings as a result of sowing in obedience but if others are blessed that is even better :)

You just keep bringing it don't ya !

I LOVE this post Rod. That Scripture jumped off the page at me several years ago right before 9/11. In fact the words were spinning in my heart for a whole day before I looked it up to see if it was really in the Bible. When I read it, the Lord clearly told me, “A famine is coming, and when it does you are NOT to go get a job. (“go to Egypt,” darn it, I was staying home w/ 4 babies.) Within a few weeks Paul was laid off from his tele-com job and suddenly our income was cut in half. We barely could pay our bills on his full income but our confession through the whole ordeal was, “Our needs are met, we're out of debt, and there's plenty today to give some away.”
Se we kept giving and kept tithing and kept believing FOR EIGHT WHOLE MONTHS! Whoa. Never did we dream it would be so long. But in those months, we never went in debt, we saw supernatural provision, and at the end, Paul got a 20% raise, followed by a 40% raise when we moved down here to Tennessee. The amazing thing was that the year he was laid off, I was never in fear a single day – until it was all over and we did our taxes and I saw the numbers and started shaking like a leaf!
    Thank God for grace!

To God be the Glory! You really brought this full circle!!!

Man, great article here AGAIN Rod. Really brings home the importance of tithing, even though we sometimes don't see “how” it works. It just does!

Thanks for this post, it's a blessing.

Gina and Rod, thanks for sharing this information. I went through some financial challenges in the last couple of years, and I was NOT tithing consistently. God has really convicted me through my Bible Study and my pastor's teaching to test Him, according to Malachi 3. Have been doing that this year, and am already feeling the peace and provision of the Lord. It doesn't necessarily mean that I will strike oil, but it does mean that I have the peace of knowing I am being obedient to Him. Already, great things have come out of the fast and the tithing, but I won't be able to fully report them until the end of the year.

That's an incredible story, Gina! Thank you for sharing your powerful testimony. And people wonder if God is real or not. It's crazy to think that some people go through life without God's provision. Awesome comment, Gina, thank you!

  • http://www.rodkirby.com Rod

I know that you'll be able to report awesome things at the end of the year, Steve. I'm glad you said you decided to “test him” that's what the word asks us to do. Just to try Him and he'll meet all of our needs.

  • http://www.rodkirby.com Rod

Thank you for pointing out that Isaac planted in the middle of a famine. It's critical that as a believer we step out on faith and remain obedient to God no matter what season of life we're in. Why? It only brings about a greater blessing AFTER the famine! Thanks man.

  • http://www.rodkirby.com Rod

Thank you, LaTara! Another reason why being obedient in the first place is awesome – you bless others and become blessed yourself! Best part of all, it continues and never stops.

  • http://www.rodkirby.com Rod

    Thank you, Buffy!

  • http://www.rodkirby.com Rod

Thank you, Craig. It's super important to tithe man. If we don't we miss out on sooooo many blessings. Financial and other.

Reap abundantly more than we can ask or think!

I am a Believer as well as a Witness! I was laid off of my job for 8 months, and I lived better than when I was working. God gave me a key and that key was the He is my SOURCE… Not my job, not man, not talents, but God and Him alone! Jehovah Jireh took care of me the whole time and I never even looked for a job. I said if He wanted me to have a job… that He would give me one. At the end of the 8 months my old boss called me back and gave me my old job back! Thank you Jesus for your Faithfulness! I have been tithing since I was 13 and now I am 36 and I have never seen the righteous forsaken or His seed begging bread!

    Blessings,
