How to Create an Editorial Calendar for Your Blog

Editorial Calendar

As an entrepreneur, you’ve got meetings to attend, employees to manage, and sales to make – it can be quite a chore to update your blog. If you’re a solo-preneur or can’t afford to hire an assistant then it can become more challenging than you thought.

The fact is, blogging for business is not dead and is still a fantastic way to boost sales, build a brand, and market to your target audience.

Enter the editorial calendar

And editorial calendar is a simple tool that will help you to;

  • Plan your blog posts in advance,
  • Schedule your blog posts,
  • Help you stay organized,
  • And keep your blog up-to-date!

There are many tools that you can use as an editorial calendar. One that I use all the time is the Editorial Calendar plugin for WordPress. If you don’t use WordPress as your blog platform [or you want something different], Google Calendar is a fantastic way to start and manage your editorial calendar!

Below is a 17 minute video tutorial that will show you exactly what an editorial calendar is, how I use it to keep quality content here, and how to get started with Google Calendar.

Treat Your Blog Like A Magazine and Take it to the Next Level

Magazine or Blog?

This week is a very special week. We’re going to be exploring blogging and how you can make more money, build a better blog, and more all week! To kick things off I want to show you how to see your blog not as “a blog,” but like a magazine.

Why?

By treating it like magazine and taking it serious you transcend the typical “social media” boundary and rise to media property heights. If this sounds cool to you then go through the slides below and let’s chat about it in the comments below.

Tomorrow we’ll explore the idea of scalability as it pertains to blogs. You’ll like it, I mentioned scalability in my latest presentation, 4 Pillars to Building a Successful Blog. By the way, this presentation was made during my session at last year’s Social Camp Memphis. Also, the concept stems from these articles;

How I Use Social Media to Promote My Blogs

Here’s a great video made my Mr.ProBlogger himself, Darren Rowse explaining the concept of the blog being your “home base” and having social media “outposts” that generate traffic. It’s a great illustration and I think it’s fitting with our exploration of social media this week. Once you watch the video, share your thoughts and strategy for promoting your blog with social media in the comments below. Enjoy!

What Would You Do if the Social Media Bubble Burst?
The Social Bubble

What if the Social Bubble Burst?

What if Facebook decided to shut down and close shop on all of it’s 400+ million users? What if Twitter could no longer serve up it’s 50+ million tweets a day? What if YouTube’s servers were shut down and could no longer host over 120+ million videos? What if the social media marketing machine finally stopped because the social media well ran dry?

Good-Bye Free Social Web

Ning, the social platform that lets anyone create their own social network, announced that it was shutting down it’s free operations to focus 100% on paid accounts. That’s thousands and thousands of social networks, videos, forums, conversations, photos, and blogs that will be shut down. I’m sure it wasn’t an easy business decision to make, but a business decision none-the-less.

Note: If you have a free account with Ning and want to back-up your network give SaveMyNing.com a try. They even have a few suggestions as to where you can migrate your network to.

Hello New Web

What if this current social media bubble we’re in burst much like the “dot-com bubble” of the early 90′s? Many would argue that we’re not in a “bubble” because of the stability of dot-coms like Amazon, Ebay, iTunes, Facebook, etc. But, like everything in life, no one thing lasts forever.

I find it interesting that major corporations are finally jumping aboard the social media marketing band wagon after seeing it’s small business counter-part’s success. Marketing online has never been as open, easy, and more valuable than it is now [mainly since people want to share, engage, and are less concerned about privacy online].

But, what if the unthinkable happened and this entire social media “thing” died and millions of people migrated to a different online ecosystem. Hypothetically, what if the system was more akin to China’s where the government controls what its citizens interact with online? No Facebook, no Twitter, no blogs to keep us all connected and engaged online. As a small business owner, what would you do?

Scary thought?

Sure.

So, What Would You Do?

I’ve got some ideas as to what I would do, but I want to open this discussion up first before we explore it more in a later post. Imagine, if you will, starting a business in this new closed internet economy – how would you market your products or services? How would you reach the masses? Remember, you don’t have access to social networks like Facebook, Twitter, or Linkedin. YouTube is shut down and so are many of the social platforms/tools that you would of had access to prior.

The ball is in your court. Let’s explore some ideas in the comments section below and share this with as many people as you can so we can get some great feedback. I’ll compile as many suggestions as possible and use them for a follow-up post.

4 Steps to Success with Social Media for Entrepreneurs

Last week, I shared 5 Tips on Managing Social Media for Entrepreneurs. I really enjoy surfing through the comments section and seeing everyone’s point of view on the topic at hand. My good friend, Annie Sorensen, left this awesome comment,

“Whenever introducing someone new to social media, my advice is always: Care. Listen. Engage. Repeat. If they have the right mindset, the right purpose, and with your tips, the right action steps, their dedication to social media will be a success!”

She essentially outlined an action plan for being successful in maximizing social media for business. Lots of entrepreneurs jump on the Twitter bandwagon or the Facebook bandwagon with no idea where they’re going. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of new tools to help you market your business. However, that quickly wears off when you don’t get the results you want. So, today, let’s look at 4 steps to being successful with social media for your business.

Step 1 – Care and they will come

Sounds silly, but the whole idea of social media is to be SOCIAL . . . geez. Some people really don’t understand that. Time and time again the “good guys and gals” of a social network are bombarded by frequent requests, direct messages, and links to products and services by the “bad guys and gals.” These people send out blasts of advertisements and make sales pitches to any and everyone without actually getting to know anyone.

If you want to use social media as a marketing tool you have to go above and beyond the traditional marketer thinking. You have to actually care about people. Caring transforms people from being a part of your target audience and into your friend. How easy is it to pitch a product or service to your friend when they already know who you are, what you’re about, and what you have to offer?

How exactly do you show that you really care about people online?

  • Take an interest into what they share – whether it’s family photos, links to their favorite blogs, or a video that they made. Comment on it and share it!
  • Talk Back! – If you have 100,000 followers on Twitter and everyone is trying to instant message you on Facebook, you’re not obligated to talk to everyone all the time. However, you should make an effort to reach and make connections when it’s possible. This is the only way people get to know who you really are. Don’t just be another “ghost profile.” Show that there’s more to you than meets the eye. (Thanks, Transformers!)
  • Be Genuine with your responses – I absolutely HATE it when someone gives me a canned response or message. Seriously! I asked a question to someone on Twitter and they sent me the same answer as they sent to someone else (Typical copy and paste move). That showed me that he was just responding to respond and could care less about the question I asked him. When you’re genuine with people you build a connecting bridge to their hearts. I’m not saying, people will love you, but you’ll definitely be received and perceived by them warmly than coldly.

Step 2 – Listening is the key to any successful relationship

Come on ladies, you know what I’m talking about here. Sometimes we have to exercise the power of “the shut up,” and allow those that we want to connect with to talk. I can remember when I started The Success Center and my articles were kind of all over the place. I was producing what I believed to be what my readers wanted. But what I thought they wanted turned out not to be what they needed. When I started to listen to them I begin to craft better quality articles that were meeting people’s needs and answering their questions. This has only deepened my relationship with readers here. How do you listen to your target market in social media?

  • Polls – I run  a new poll every week but each one gives me insight into the needs of my audience. Polls are also great ways to get feedback on certain issues and can increase your blog traffic and activity.
  • Blog Comments – having anyone comment on your blog or website can be golden as I mentioned at the start of this article. I typically find that comments can help create expanded articles (like this one), jump start new discussions on other platforms, and again creates a deeper relationship with your readers.
  • Ask questions on Social Networks – This kind of ties into running polls, but when you don’t have a poll on your website, try asking it on a social network like Facebook or Twitter. The responses you get are often super fast and can be discussed further in Facebook or Linkedin groups.

Step 3 – Engage and they’ll come with their friends

The whole “entrepreneurial idea” of social networking is to meet new people and have those people talk about you to their friends. To get people to talk about you follow Steps 1 & 2 above.

They’ll say, “Rod sure is a cool guy, he really cares about me and is always there to listen when I need him.”

To get them to talk about you to their friends you have to constantly engage with them on some level. Then they’ll say,

“Rod also tries to help me reach my goals. You should give him a call because I’m sure he can do the same for you.”

Engaging people on social networks is really going above and beyond what they’d expect from you. If we’re friends on Facebook, you would expect me to comment on your status update, pictures, and the such. What you might not expect from me is to share a link or information that could actually solve a problem you’re having. Here are a couple of other ways to engage with people across different social networks;

  • Twitter – Retweet messages that you think people in your network will find valuable. Share links to articles, news, videos, podcasts, other forms of content that you find interesting or relative to your target market. Be a first responder to the questions people ask or deliver information to help out.
  • Facebook – Share links to valuable articles or videos relative to your “friends’” interests. Share unique content with group members from your own website or blog. If someone’s new to the network give them a quick “how-to” and show them the ropes.
  • Linkedin – Share articles or write specific articles for your groups. Answer questions related to your specific field of expertise in the Linkedin “Answers” tab.

Engagement, as you can clearly see, involves sharing and interacting with others. It’s a totally self-less act that can net you big props from your peers and potential clients. I mentioned showing new people the ropes when it comes to starting on a network. This is a great strategy to build a relationship early on and become the “go-to” guy or gal within your network.

Step 4 – Repeat

The last step is actually the most critical. Repeating doesn’t only mean to start over. To me it means to keep it consistent and do it over AND over. This is how you’ll build great relationships that will last over time. This is how you’ll win over new fans and maintain the ones you’ve built bridges with. This is how you’ll easily be able to market any new product or service you introduce and they’ll embrace you rather than turn you away. This is how you’ll be successful with social media as an entrepreneur.

Did I miss anything? How are you finding your own success with social media and social networking? What techniques do you use to build relationships within your network? I value everyone’s opinion so please feel free to sign in with your Twitter or Facebook accounts and leave a comment below.

The Power of Storytelling in Social Media Marketing
Story Telling

Story Telling

A few years ago, marketing your product or service online cost hundreds (if not, thousands) of dollars with a slick web design, buying banner ads, hiring a SEO (search engine optimization) expert, and buying ad space with Google.

Today, you can get the same (if not, better) results through social media marketing. Contrary to popular belief, marketing using social tools and platforms is more than simply launching a Facebook fan page, Twitter profile, and offering unique discounts to your followers and fans. You have to tell and share your story.

The Power of Storytelling

Once upon a time a young man wanted to rule the world with his multi-million dollar ideas. He was into video-games so he started to host video-game tournaments at his college. He tried to get sponsorships from Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony but they all rejected him. He figured he could raise the capital he needed by launching another project, a DVD magazine, but that failed too. This young man went to college for digital design and decided to go back to his roots as a graphic designer. He enjoyed a bit of success as he became the “go-to” guy to handle graphic and moderate web design needs.

As the young man matured he noticed a need within his community for other “boot strapping” entrepreneurs to learn how to be efficient, wise marketers, and over all become successful without get-rich-quick schemes. So, he started a seminar series empowering, equipping, and inspiring entrepreneurs to success. His name and accolades for his seminars spread across the land. He was invited to speak at conferences and business functions around the mid-south at the ripe age of 24.

A few years later the young man decided to share his wisdom, knowledge, and understanding of entrepreneurship with the world and launched a blog. That blog quickly became the number one Christian entrepreneur’s blog for small business, marketing, and social media help. To this day the young man’s name reaches far within the depths of cyber space, his blog continues to help others, it grows at an exceptional monthly rate, and he still enjoys video-games. . .

Why Share Your Story?

Of course, the story above is about me and I love sharing that story of my life because it’s what got me to where I am today. People enjoy hearing it and trust me to handle their small business needs because I used the story to bring them into understanding who I am instead of trying to “pitch them.”

Traditional marketing tells us to take one message and spread it consistently across different mediums to sell our products and services. Social media marketing is about sharing a message that’s within YOU and reaching people online. By making your story the core of your product or service marketing versus a message, celebrity, or fancy logo, you open the door for people to engage with your company on deeper levels than ever before.

Ways to Tell Your Story

Blogging – By far, the best way to tell your story is in helpful, digestible (short), blog posts. Blogging allows you to extend your message long after a TV spot or radio ad. I love blogging and I feel free every-time I post good content. Here are a few suggestions to telling your story through blogging;

  • Use lessons learned as the basis for your blog posts – you’ll heal and help someone along the way.
  • Experiment and switch up your blogging voice to tell a story in a different way (try humor, list styled posts, debatable topics, etc.).
  • A powerful way to start your blog post is to tell an actual story.

Resource: Check out my presentation, 4 Pillars to Building a Successful Blog, for more help growing a successful blog.

Social Networks (Twitter, Facebook, or wherever you network online) – Social networks are great places to share your story because what you share can be shared by everyone else. When you share something really useful or good for the community it gives it back to you by having your content go viral. This act increases your reach, grows your network, and puts your message in front of eyeballs you never would have reached any other way.

  • Share articles, information, links, videos, and other fresh content that enhances your story.
  • Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there; give your best advice, tips, and share your past experiences.
  • Share your story! – let people know who you are and invite them to connect. You’ll gain more followers, fans, friends, and a greater community because of your openness.

Video & Audio (Youtube, Blogtalkradio, etc.) – Creating videos and podcasts brings another dimension to your story telling because you can share your story, the story of others, unfold the story of the world around you, and more!

  • Record video of you giving your best advice, tips, sharing fresh information, or even “how-to’s”
  • Conduct interviews and give your viewers or listeners a different story that relates to your message.

The End of One Story and the Beginning of Another

Story telling is no doubt the key to success in social media marketing. It’s the glue that keeps people engaged with your brand and business. How do YOU use social media to tell YOUR story? What platforms do you share your story on? If you’re new to social media marketing how can we all help YOU understand this concept? 6 Ways to Market Yourself after You Quit Your Job
Market Yourself

Market Yourself

Last week I wrote an article called, Quit Your Job and Make Millions, which takes a look at some of the things you should do so you can quit your 9-5 and start that dream business of yours. I followed that up with, Save Money, Quit Your Job, and Make Millions which takes a first-hand look at the financial aspects of quitting your job to start a business. So, let’s go a bit deeper and assume that you’ve finally quit your job, saved up enough cash to keep you a float for a couple months, and have everything you need to get started. Now what?

You might have killer services or products but they won’t go anywhere if you don’t get the word out about them. In this post let’s explore some ways to market yourself once you’ve finally quit your job and started your business.

1. Professional Head Shots – It’s time to ditch your web cam snap shots, cell phone pictures, and your mom’s pictures of you from your local Sears photo studio. Spending a little money on quality head shots from a professional photographer can and will go a long way. Sure it might cost you a little for quality, but they’ll become one of your biggest assets once you finally quit your job. Head shots will increase your marketability, exposure (if used strategically), and profile.

2. Business Cards – Yes, people still have business cards and hand them out. It’s still the number one way people can get all your information in one space. Now that you’ve got your snazzy new head shots, plop those bad boys onto  a card and have your face do all the talking! Go full color for maximum impact and pay for high quality card stock so it won’t get easily tossed into the trash. Also, try out a double-sided card. One side to promote yourself and the other for your business, services, or products.

3. Start an Email Newsletter – Newsletters are extremely easy to start, manage, and promote. Especially via the web. Select an area of your business that’s easy for you to share with anyone (universal appeal) and write short articles, tips, insider info, etc. to support your business. A newsletter is an excellent way to engage with potential customers because it positions you as an expert in your field. I use Constant Contact as my newsletter marketing service of choice. They make it easy for you to create a newsletter, customize it’s look, collect data, and get statistics so you can see who opened your email. To see email newsletter marketing in action, sign-up for my “Success Tips!” newsletter here. (Beyond that reason, you’ll also get awesome weekly tips on being successful directly from me, all killer no filler.)

4. Get on LinkedinLinkedin is a great professional social networking website that allows you to connect with people in your industry, share information, and join groups of like minded individuals. We’ll explore more of the social networking aspect of quitting your job and starting a business on Wednesday. For now, just know, that if you’re not on Linkedin then you’re missing opportunities! What kind? What about having all your professional information easily accessible to over 40 million professionals? Yea . . . it’s kind of a big deal.

5. Do Market Research – Have you ever tried writing a term paper without doing the research first? Why would you start a business without finding out who your competitors are, who you want as customers, or how your competitors are reaching their market? You don’t have to write a booklet on the subject, but you need to know some general things so you know how to best impact the market. Remember, if you don’t know who your customer is, what they want, and who’s giving it to them . . . your competitor does!

Note: Constant Contact has a great survey service that allows you to collect information from people and track results. Give it a try, it’s priceless!

6. Start a Blog – Blogging is a fantastic way of engaging your market on a broader scale. It positions you as an expert, draws people into who you are and what you do, and is extremely easy to promote when you maximize the tools already listed in this post. There are plenty of articles here that can help you get the best ROI with your blogging efforts. By the way, you can also educate potential customers on your products or services strategically. Why make a sales call when the sales could come calling you?

One thing I teach my coaching students is that YOU are your business. When you’re just starting out you have to create and market the brand of You, inc. When people connect with you they’ll automatically want to connect with your company. This is called magnetic branding. You could spend hundreds of dollars on a TV and Radio advertising; but when you present yourself people connect with who you are and not just what you have to offer . You’ll create raving fans of your products or services and not just one-time buyers.

What other ways would you market yourself, services, or products? If you own a business, how did you get the word out about your company? This list represents only the tip of the iceberg of marketing yourself. What would you add? Sign-in to your favorite social site like Twitter, Facebook, or use your OpenID and leave a comment below.
